Spilia is a village a few kilometers inland from the coastal town and tourist resort Kolymbari (3 kilometers away). It lies in a green plain amongst citrus trees and olive groves, about 30 kilometers west of the city of Chania. Spilia has around 275 inhabitants. According to tradition the village was named after the cave (Spilia means "cave") of Agios Ioannis. In this cave there is a church. According to legend, this was the place where Saint John went to live after he had to flee from the Middle East. On the left wall of the last room is a kind of altar. It is said that this was also used as an altar, and Saint John slept on it as well. The path leads on through a gorge to the monastery Katholiki. The route is marked by a sign (a bit at the end of the village turn right).
