Lisbon is the third best city in the world for foreigners to live in

Lisbon is the third best city in the world for foreigners to live in, after the Spanish cities of Valencia and Alicante, which occupy first and second place respectively. Lisbon is also the only Portuguese city in the "Expat City Ranking 2020", drawn up by InterNations, which also features two more Spanish cities in the top 10: Malaga and Madrid.

A total of 66 cities are analysed in the Expat City Ranking, which takes into account and/or evaluates five particular areas: quality of urban life, accommodation (ease of settling down), urban working life, finance and housing and cost of local living. Lisbon was among the top 10 in three of these categories: 3rd in accommodation, 4th in quality of urban life and 6th in cost of local living. The capital has a less positive outlook in the categories urban working life (23rd place) and finance and housing (27th place), but is still in the top half of the ranking.

Who took part in the survey? In this year's Expat City Ranking 2020, based on the annual Expat Insider survey, more than 15,000 people of 173 nationalities and living in 181 countries took part. Some state that they are dissatisfied with the state of the economy (19%), but happy with the balance between work and personal life, as well as with their jobs.

The majority of expats or foreigners (82%) say they feel at home in Lisbon, a much higher figure than the average (64%), while 79% say they are happy with social life in the capital, much more so than the average for other big cites (59%).

Foreigners living in Lisbon are still satisfied with their professional situation (79% compared to 65% on average in the other cities), but almost three out of eight respondents (37%) said they had difficulties in finding a home, a figure higher than the average for the other metropolises analysed (27%).
